A-League: Dominant Victory defeated by Jets
Victory put out a new look starting 11 with a number of changes from last week in which Christian Theoharous was given his first start of the season at left wing.
The game began in physical fashion, with plenty of fouls early on. Victory had the better chances out of the two teams in the first half, with Rhys Williams and Kosta Barbarouses coming close to giving Melbourne the lead.
Right on the half hour mark, Nigel Boogaard scored a header from a set piece to give Newcastle the lead.
Berisha had a fantastic opportunity to put Victory level before the end of the first half, but was denied by a fantastic save from Newcastle keeper Jack Duncan.
The second half began on a sour note, as Victory favorite, Lawrence Thomas was substituted with a suspected concussion after a big collision with former Victory forward Andrew Nabbout.
Despite major chances from Victory, Newcastle struck again against the run of play through Riley McGree in the 70th minute.
It ended a disappointing night for Victory as they dominated the majority of the game, yet couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.
